Market Insights: Ecuador - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses

Researchmoz added Most up-to-date research on "Ecuador - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses" to its huge collection of research reports.

In common with a number of other mid-sized countries in the region, Ecuador has a small telecom market with a dominant mobile sector. The evolution of the market has been influenced by the poor fixed-line infrastructure, which has stymied the development o fixed-line broadband services. To some extent poor infrastructure has been the result of topographical challenges which have rendered the cost of deploying networks to n remote and mountainous areas prohibitive. However, there has also been a legacy of underinvestment in telecoms infrastructure as a whole.

Although Ecuador has seven fixed-line operators and a large number of Internet Service Providers (ISPs), the state-owned incumbent CNT dominates the fixed-line market, and thus also the DSL broadband market.

The mobile sector is dominated by América Móvil’s Conecel (trading as Claro), which had a 56% share of the market by subscribers as of February 2018. Telefónica’s Otecel (trading as Movistar) has about a third of the market, leaving CNT (previously Telecsa/Alegro) with a share of only 12%. Thus far the MVNO sector has been slow to develop, partly because the incumbent operators also have their low-cost brands and thus there is little business case for new market entrants. Virgin Mobile is expected to launch a service in Ecuador, following on from similar launches in Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

The government is keen to advance universalisation and improve teledensity, and it is expected that CNT will continue its efforts to expand the country’s fixed-line infrastructure and capitalise on its DSL service, which only took off in 2009. At the same time, a national broadband plan has been implemented to expand and improve internet access for all Ecuadoreans. The fixed broadband market – including DSL, cable modem and fibre-based services – should continue to grow strongly in coming years, with an anticipated focus on fibre as networks are built out from the more densely populated urban areas. The mobile broadband market is also expected to grow strongly as network operators expand the reach of their LTE services.

A new Telecom Law has been the subject of national and international controversy, particularly for its treatment of broadcasting. The most controversial points include the redistribution of spectrum and the creation of a regulatory authority in charge of censorship.

Rwanda - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses

Researchmoz added Most up-to-date research on "Rwanda - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses" to its huge collection of research reports.

The Rwandan telecom market continues to develop strongly, buttressed by sustained GDP growth which has seen the country develop one the fastest-growing economies in the world. Supported by significant foreign aid, this growth has been helped by prudent fiscal and monetary policies which have create a business-friendly environment conducive to investment.

Nevertheless, poverty remains widespread. There is little economic diversity, with most of the population engaged in agriculture and a good proportion of the remainder involved in mineral and agro-processing sectors. The financial services sector is also underdeveloped: with banks focussed on government borrowing there is little attention paid to the support of small businesses, and most of the population has little or no access to conventional banking services. In turn, this has made Rwanda one of the more successful markets on the continent for mobile banking and payment services.

The country was slow to liberalise the mobile sector, allowing MTN a monopoly until 2006 when the fixed-line incumbent, Rwandatel (since acquired by Liquid Telecom) became the second mobile operator. There has been effective competition among the three current operators, each of which provides wide geographic coverage. The launch of services from Tigo in 2009 sparked renewed subscriber growth, though competition has eroded mobile services revenue and ARPU since then. However, the acquisition of Tigo by Airtel, a deal to be closed over a two-year period, will see the Tigo brand removed and a significant consolidation in the market.

Rwanda’s internet and broadband sector has suffered from limited fixed-line infrastructure and high prices. Nevertheless, operators are rolling out national fibre-optic backbone networks which also allow them to connect to the international submarine fibre-optic cables on the African east coast. These cables have given the entire region fibre-based international bandwidth for the first time and brought to an end its dependency on satellites. Suring 2018 Liquid Telecom has continued to expand its FttP services across Kigali and a number of other towns.

Interest from investors in the country’s ICT sector remains strong. A deal with Korea Telecom has developed a wholesale LTE operator, Korea Telecom Rwanda Networks, which provides retail services to a number of fixed-line operators as well as to the mobile network operators. The number of subscribers on LTE infrastructure increased 200% in 2016, year-on-year.

This report contains an overview and analysis of Rwanda’s telecommunications market, profiles of the major players in all market sectors, relevant statistics and analysis, and mobile subscriber forecasts to 2023.

Overview Of Botswana - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses

Researchmoz added Most up-to-date research on "Botswana - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses" to its huge collection of research reports.

Botswana’s government and regulator critical of Liquid Telecom joint venture
Effective regulatory reform has turned the Botswana’s telecom market into one of the most liberalised in the region. There is a service-neutral licensing regime which takes into account the increasing convergence of technologies and services. A number of operators now compete effectively, particularly in the mobile segment.

Although the number of mobile subscribers fell sharply at the end of 2016, Botswana still has one of the highest mobile penetration rates in Africa. Popular use of multiple SIM cards from different operators has delayed the introduction of mobile number portability, with the telecom regulator not convinced of the facility’s economic benefits. In a bid to generate new revenue streams and secure market share, the three mobile network operators (MNOs) – Mascom Wireless (an affiliate of South Africa’s MTN), Orange Botswana (backed by Orange Group) and BTC – have entered the underdeveloped broadband sector by adopting of 3G, LTE and WiMAX technologies. In the fixed-line broadband market they compete with a large number of ISPs, some of which have rolled out their own wireless access infrastructure.

After a period of stagnation, the number of internet users has risen strongly in recent years, largely the result of lower prices following improvements in international connectivity. Historically, the landlocked country has depended on satellites for its international bandwidth, and on other countries for transit capacity to landing points of international submarine fibre optic cable systems. The landing of additional cables in the region in recent years has improved the competitive situation in this sector, while prices for connectivity have fallen by up to 70%. The stability and cheaper cost of fixed-line broadband services continues to attract subscribers, though mobile internet remains the preferred choice for most, particularly among the large proportion of younger people in the country.

The much delayed privatisation of BTC has been facilitated by the transfer of network assets and the management of BTC’s involvement in two key submarine cables to the newly created wholesale operator Botswana Fiber Networks (BoFiNet). BTC through this process has been transformed into a retailer of services. An IPO was completed in April 2016. There was considerable interest in the 44% of the company made available, with 5% reserved for employees and 51% being retained by the state. Some 50,000 private investors now have a stake in the operator.

Indonesia - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses : Researchmoz

Researchmoz added Most up-to-date research on "Ingodonesia - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband - Statistics and Analyses" to its huge collection of research reports.

Indonesia still faces some big challenges if it is to successfully continue the building of the telecommunications infrastructure required to support a large population spread over what is a uniquely complex geography. Continued progress in the development of the telecom sector will need further government action on restructuring the industry.

Indonesia is ranked 17th on the Asian Telecoms Maturity Index with an Index score of 33. Indonesia is also ranked 10th in the ‘Market Challengers” category out of 16 countries. (BuddeComm’s “Asian Telecoms Maturity Index”, is an index (on a scale between 0 and 100) that measures and ranks the relative maturity of the telecoms industry in all of the 34 countries in Asia.) Compared to other Asian nations, Indonesia has very low fixed line and fixed broadband penetration, high mobile penetration and moderate mobile broadband penetration.

Fixed broadband penetration in Indonesia remains relatively low mainly due to a limited number of fixed lines and the dominance of the mobile platform. The fixed broadband market has grown slightly over the past five years from a very small base. Over the next five years to 2022 moderate growth is expected to continue  from this very small base.

4G mobile services offering mobile broadband is now relatively advanced in Indonesia and act as a direct substitute to fixed line broadband. This also inhibits  further fixed broadband rollouts. Mobile broadband subscribers have grown rapidly over the past five years in Indonesia. Strong growth is predicted over the next five years to 2022.

Not only is wireless-based mobile broadband helping to get more people online; it is also bypassing the problem of inferior telecommunications infrastructure that has been impeding fixed broadband expansion.

Indonesia’s mobile market has displayed very strong growth over the last five years and particularly during 2016 to 2018. Growing use of mobile broadband has been a significant driver of this strong growth. The market has seen a strong increase in subscribers from the market leader Telkomsel, supported by very strong growth from XL Axiata and Indosat Ooredoo.

Industry consolidation is possible towards 2019 as intense data competition may force smaller and unprofitable mobile operators to be pushed out of the market. Industry consolidation is more likely to have a positive impact on the local telco sector as it will reduce the overcapacity in the market and bring more stability to data tariffs.

Mobile subscriber growth is expected to be relatively low over the next five years to 2022 as the market further matures in a highly competitive market. The market will be driven by the uptake of both 4G and 5G services.
