Singapore - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses

Researchmoz added Most up-to-date research on "Singapore - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses" to its huge collection of research reports.

Fibre broadband adoption gains momentum in Singapore

Singapore has developed the status of a world leader in telecommunications through the building of a high quality and extremely progressive regulatory environment for the local telecommunications sector that has, in turn, generated a highly competitive market.

Growth in number of fixed lines in Singapore has remained relatively stable over the period from 2012 to 2017. Growth in telecom services in Singapore is now dominated by the mobile segment. Penetration of fixed lines is expected to remain stable or drop slightly, in the period from 2018 to 2020.

In its efforts to maintain Singapore’s status as an ICT market leader, the government launched its plan for a nationwide fibre-based broadband network: the Next Generation Broadband Network (NGNBN). The roll out and deployment of this national network has effectively been completed and there is rapid take-up of fibre-based services.

Singapore has been working to shape itself into what it says will be the world’s first ‘Smart Nation’ where data and analytics play a critical role in its society and economy. Smart Nation is Singapore’s vision to tap into the potential of technology to improve the lives of citizens and create greater opportunities for business.

Singapore’s mobile market has displayed slow growth over the last few years due to a highly mature market with penetration reaching 149% by 2017. However the market over the next five years to 2022 is unlikely to grow much further.

The ‘mix’ of mobile services is rapidly changing, with 2G having almost disappeared, 3G numbers declining and Long Term Evolution (LTE) / 4G service offerings continuing to expand rapidly.

Competition is now heating up in Singapore’s mobile market with a fourth provider Australian telco TPG Telecom set to launch services shortly. TPG Telecom has recently won the right to become the city-state’s fourth mobile network operator (MNO), defeating MyRepublic, another operator that has been trying to enter the local market over the past few years. This is likely to see increased pressure on SingTel, Starhub and M1, potentially triggering another price war which is likely to lower ARPUs over the next two years to 2019.

The launch of third generation (4G) services by all three operators and the subsequent development of this platform has been a transformational move for Singapore’s mobile market and has seen the adoption of new generation services steadily increase. The eventual launch of 5G services will further this transformation.

Singapore boasts an elaborate inter network, with around 100% of internet households having broadband access. The government has continued to maintain a strong commitment to making broadband access widely available to the population and at the same time lifting the overall quality of the access.

Wireless broadband has seen strong growth over the past few years driven by the migration to the NGNBN. By 2018 wireless broadband penetration is predicted to reach over 200%.

Optical fibre broadband also has seen strong growth as customers migrate to the NGNBN’s optical fibre network. xDSL on the other hand has seen a decrease in usage and cable modem broadband also has been experiencing declining subscriber numbers.

Slow growth in the fixed broadband market is predicted over the next five years in a mature and saturated market. Market penetration is predicted to increase moderately by 2022.

Key developments:

- Singapore has officially launched the new Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA).
- Data and analytics start to play a critical role in Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative.
- Long Term Evolution (LTE) / 4G service offerings continue to expand rapidly.
- Singtel successfully tested fifth-generation mobile technology.
- The IMDA spearheading joint-industry trials of Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) technology.
- M1 announced plans to deploy the city-state’s first commercial Heterogeneous Network (HetNet).
- Slow growth is predicted in the fixed broadband market to 2022 years in a mature and saturated market.
- Both wireless broadband and fibre broadband will continue to be the fastest growing broadband segments.
- Data and analytics are playing a critical role in Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative.

Key companies mentioned in this report:

SingTel; StarHub, MobileOne (M1), TPG (Telecom), MyRepublic

Caribbean Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Digital Media Market Statistics and Analyses Research Report

Researchmoz added Most up-to-date research on "Caribbean - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses" to its huge collection of research reports.

Caribbean operators ramp up investments in LTE and GPON fibre services

The telecoms sector is one of the Caribbean region’s major growth sectors, particularly in the mobile telephony and data segments. Although there are a number of smaller players operating, the sector is dominated by Digicel group and by Liberty Global, which acquired the long-time operator Cable & Wireless Communications and with it the network operator Columbus Communications. As a result, both actively compete against in other in a large number of countries in the region, and their fixed-line and mobile infrastructure assets allow them to provide bundled packages to customers.

Digicel’s key offering, Digicel Play, is available in a growing number of markets. The company has concentrated investments in fibre networks and in LTE. In May 2017 it launched LTE services across Bermuda, the latest island to benefit from these investment efforts.

The region’s economy has largely recovered from the downturn experienced after the 2008 GFC. The recovery of economies in the US and Europe was crucial for the recovery of the tourism sector, on which many countries rely for a good proportion of revenue. Trinidad & Tobago has a particularly vulnerable economy, since it is the region’s largest oil and gas exporter. The country has also become a major financial centre in the Caribbean. It is one of two countries in the region which is not part of Venezuela’s Petro-Caribe scheme that provides preferential or deferred payment options for buying oil.

There have been ongoing changes in telecoms regulations across the region, with national regulators focussed on efforts to improve competition and to facilitate investment. In the Bahamas the regulator, the PUC, activated Mobile Number Portability in April 2017, allowing mobile subscribers to port their numbers between BTC and Cable Bahamas’ newly formed mobile unit Aliv within two hours of a request being made. Cable Bahamas expected that with MNP in place Aliv could capture a 30% share of the mobile market by the end of 2017.

In the Cayman Islands, which has the highest teledensity in the region, the regulator ICTA which was set up in 2002 was replaced by a new regulatory body, the Utility Regulation and Competition Office (OfReg), in January 2017. This new body combined ICTA with the Electricity Regulatory Authority and the Cayman Petroleum Inspectorate.

Key developments:

- Digicel Bermuda launches island-wide LTE services;
- Bahamas regulator introduces MNP;
- Digicel showcases 100Gb/s technology on its Barbados network;

Recent Survey on Poland - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses

Researchmoz added Most up-to-date research on "Poland - Telecoms, Mobile, Broadband and Digital Media - Statistics and Analyses" to its huge collection of research reports.

Poland’s liberalised telecom market has seen considerable development in all sectors. The incumbent telco Orange Poland has seen its market share dwindle in the face of competition and a regulatory environment which has facilitated the market entry of new players and extended network to Orange Poland’s fibre and copper networks.

The mobile market in recent years has been characterised by the rapid extension of LTE networks and the development of services. By early 2017 mobile penetration stood at around 142%, among the highest rates in the region. For many years the popularity among consumers for keeping two or more SIM cards distorted the mobile penetration rate. This has been addressed on to fronts: by the regulator encouraging network operators to disconnect dormant SIM cards, and by the government which passed legislation, effective from February 2017, which obliged prepaid SIM card holders to register their details with network providers. As a result there has been a significant readjustment in the number of subscribers in the market since 2015.

The market has effective competition from a number of MNOs, and has room for about 20 MVNOs. ARPU continues to be adversely affected by retail tariff competition and regulatory mandated reductions in mobile termination rates and roaming tariffs. However, operators anticipate that ARPU will stabilise in coming years in line with consumer adoption of mobile data services, facilitated by improved network infrastructure. LTE networks provide extensive population coverage, which will increase further into 2017 as operators make greater use of concessions in the 800MHz and 2600MHz bands, released to them in early 2016, and refarm spectrum currently used for GSM and 3G services.

Poland’s fixed broadband market has benefited from excellent cross-platform competition, with comprehensive DSL infrastructure complemented by extensive cable networks and a growing fibre presence. Commercial considerations meant that fibre was for some years restricted to a number of urban areas, though more recently the sector has received considerable financial support from the government and the European Union. This support is aimed at building fibre-based networks across the country (particularly in eastern areas) and promoting fibre connectivity to end-users. As a result, the proportion of broadband subscribers receiving a service of at least 100Mb/s has increased sharply in recent years. In the cable sector some market consolidation has continued with the acquisition by Liberty Global of the cable assets of Multimedia Polska.

This report covers key aspects of Poland’s evolving telecom market, presenting comprehensive data and information on market players, fixed-line networks and technologies, the wholesale market, as well as an overview of key regulatory developments. The report also reviews the mobile market, providing profiles of the major operators together with updated operating and financial results. It details recent regulatory measures and spectrum auction results, and assesses the reach and capabilities of deployed mobile technologies. In addition the profiles the fixed broadband and digital media markets, including a review of the key market players, statistics and technology platforms, and an assessment of recent market developments. It also includes fixed-line broadband forecasts to 2022.
